The Prime Minister of Sri Lanka, Dr. Harini Amarasuriya, and the High Commissioner of India, Mr. Santosh Jha, jointly inaugurated and officially handed over houses constructed with Indian assistance under the Sri Sobitha Nahimigama Project at Oyamaduwa, Elapathgama in the Anuradhapura District on 12th July 2025.

The Sri Sobitha Nahimigama Housing Project was constructed by Central Engineering Services (Pvt) Ltd. (CESL) and was awarded to its parent organization, the Central Engineering Consultancy Bureau (CECB), as a Design and Build contract.

The event was graced by the presence of the Minister of Urban Development, Construction and Housing, Hon. Dr. Anura Karunathilaka; Minister of Trade, Commerce, Food Security and Cooperative Development, Hon. Wasantha Samarasinghe; Deputy Minister of Urban Development, Construction and Housing, Hon. T.B. Sarath; Former Speaker of Parliament, Mr. Karu Jayasuriya; Member of Parliament, Prof. Sena Nanayakkara; the District Secretary of Anuradhapura; President of the Sobitha Thero Foundation, Mr. Ravi Jayawardana; Chairman of CESL and CECB, Eng. A.P. Jayatissa; Chief Executive Officer of CESL, Eng. Anura Semasinghe; engineers of CESL; and other distinguished guests.

The aim of the project was to construct 115 houses and associated infrastructure for the residents of Elapathgama village in response to a request made by the Ven. Maduluwawe Sobitha Thero Foundation. Under the revised plan, the Government of India provided financial assistance of Rs. 450 Mn. for the construction of 90 houses, while the Government of Sri Lanka has constructed 25 houses along with additional facilities including a house for monks and a library. The 25 houses and their associated facilities were inaugurated and handed over in April 2024, while the remaining 90 houses were officially handed over on 12th July 2025.
